Dr Shastri Persad

Originally from Trinidad & Tobago, Shastri moved to Ireland in 1998 to study medicine in Trinity College Dublin. After graduating from TCD in 2003, he worked in various specialties of surgery as part of the West of Ireland Basic Surgical Training Scheme before moving to General Practice and completing the Western Training Programme in GP.

During his surgical training, Shastri obtained Membership with the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and he also has Membership with the Irish College of General Practice.

As a result of his previous experience, Shastri has a special interest in Minor Surgery and performs a wide range of procedures including Excision of Skin Lesions, Joint and Tendon Injections, Vasectomy, Mirena Coil Insertion, and Implanon insertion.

Shastri has completed a number of postgraduate diplomas relevant to General Practice. He is also a registered smear taker with the National Cervical Screening Programme. He is registered in the Specialist Division of the Medical Council for General Practice. He is also an ICGP Tutor in Contraception and LARC (Long Acting Reversible Contraception).

Shastri is also a Cosmetic Practitioner with training in Botulinum Toxin Injection.

Shastri joined the practice in January 2016. He was based in the Salthill Medical Centre in Upper Salthill for over 3 and a half years before taking over from Dr Declan Larkin.

Dr Grainne Ahern

Grainne studied Medicine in University College Dublin from 2008-2013 having previously completed an LLB in Trinity College Dublin. She took up a place on the Western Training Scheme for General Practice in 2015. During her training, she rotated between specialities including obstetrics, paediatrics, psychiatry and emergency medicine.  She graduated from the Western Training Scheme in General Practice in 2021 and joined Knocknacarra Family Care shortly afterwards. She practices on the Specialist Division of the Irish Medical Council and is a member of the Irish College of General Practitioners.

She has a special interest in all areas of women’s health and has completed post graduate diplomas and certificates in different areas including contraception and hormone replacement therapy.  She is a certified smear taker with Cervical Check and is fully trained in the insertion of intrauterine contraceptive devices and Implanon.  She also has an interest in chronic disease management including diabetes and works closely with our Practice Nurse Helen in the running of our Chronic Disease Clinics.

Grainne is available for appointments Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Nurse Helen Mathieson
RGN

Helen qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1995 in London. She returned to Ireland in 1998 and has worked as a practice nurse for many years. Helen joined the team at at Knocknacarra Family Care in Sept 2020 bringing with her a wealth of experience and expertise. She is a certified smear taker as part of the Cervical Check programme and also has a keen interest in the management of chronic diseases. Helen also runs the childhood immunisation programme at the surgery as well as screening and diagnostic services such as ECGs and 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
